The UAE has announced the continuation of distance learning across schools and higher education institutions for two weeks, starting after the spring break. The decision, issued on March 17, 2026, by the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council, aims to ensure student safety while maintaining the continuity of learning across the country.
When Does the Decision to Continue Distance Learning Begin?
Distance learning will begin again at the end of the spring break and the start of the third academic term. The situation will be reviewed on a weekly basis, with updates communicated through official school channels.
What Does the UAE Distance Learning Decision Include?
The decision includes three key measures affecting schools, universities, and working parents.
Distance Learning for Schools
Distance learning will continue across all public and private schools, including nurseries and kindergartens, for a period of two weeks. This applies to students as well as teaching and administrative staff, with the situation to be reviewed weekly.
Distance Learning for Universities
Students in higher education institutions will also continue remote learning for two weeks following the spring break. Institutions may adopt flexible work arrangements for academic and administrative staff to support continued learning during this period.
Flexible Remote Work for Parents
The decision includes flexible remote work arrangements for caregivers among federal government employees, where job roles allow, particularly for parents of students from kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as children officially enrolled in nurseries, in coordination with the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources.
Why Did the UAE Extend Distance Learning?
The decision aligns with the UAE’s broader efforts to prioritize student safety and support family stability. It also reflects the goals of the “Year of the Family,” which focuses on strengthening family cohesion and creating a supportive environment for students and parents during the academic term.
Can Schools Return to In-Person Learning?
The decision allows private institutions, including schools, nurseries, and universities, to request a return to in-person learning based on their operational needs. These requests will be reviewed by the relevant authorities before approval.
